The last time that the oversized boxy jacket with the oversized shoulder pads aka the “Boyfriend Jacket” was around, I was in college. At the time, I wore this trend to the extreme. My favorite was a real tuxedo jacket that my dad had tossed to the side when it no longer fit with the sleeves pushed up, crisp white shirt, jeans and flat shoes. Its no secret that I am not in college anymore and I would feel very silly trying to go back to that. Actually, it would break one of my hard and fast rules for style…never wear a trend twice! But the boyfriend jacket is everywhere and I still LOVE them….so the age old question is how to wear the trend in a way that is relevant while being age appropriate?
Two of my favorite words…princess seams. This jacket has them along with shoulder and waist darts and a slightly rounded hemline. I CAN wear the look that is tailored to my body type thanks to this ingenious construction detail that takes down the “boxiness” just a notch. It takes into consideration the silhouette of my body and allows me to follow the idea of the trend without looking like I raided the attic at my parents house! This white boyfriend jacket from Doncaster will be in my closet and the closet of many of my clients this season. It fits my life and my body now and every girl needs at least one great white go to jacket in her spring/summer closet!

I love the idea of wearing sequins all day. From work to evening. In Las Vegas and in Scottsdale. We might even see this in San Jose but I’m not expecting it to be everywhere you look. I am probably a little too classic to pull it off but there’s no question that it is going to be a hot trend for Spring. The long list of designers showing this for Spring range from the uber trendy Alice & Olivia, Anna Sui and Isaac Mizrahi to the elite establishment of Pucci, Christian Dior, and Armani. And shoe designers from Lanvin tennis shoes to Doc Martens (yep, sparkly Doc Martens combat boots!). Looks like there will also be sequin sandals!
Sequins have been popular for the past few seasons. The extension to day wear is the big news. And where they are showing up: on suit pieces tailored for business, on hoodies, and twinsets. On cute skirts, accessories, jeans and pants. And on every fabric and color imaginable.
Are there any rules to this trend? One very important one. Do not overdo it. Strictly one piece with sequins.
Here are a few sequined treasures from the Doncaster Spring 2010 line. These have classic lines with a trendy edge. Take this anywhere and wear them anytime.

My informal survey of the weather, based solely on the status updates of my Facebook friends around the country, indicates that the weather is mostly warm days and cool evenings. As the evenings get crisp, its always good to have a little something to put over one’s shoulders. This season, the knitted cable sweater vests are a smart and stylish trend for now and into the cooler days. Wear it now with a short sleeved blouse or tee shirt and with a turtleneck as the weather turns cold.
Its important to avoid too much bulk around the midsection so look for a tie or belt to cinch in at the waist. I love the v necks of the season but the cowl collar, which frames the face is the most flattering. It brings attention to the face and camoflages the neck and upper arm. It also brings the eye up and away from the midsection.
This great Belted Cable Sweater Vest from New York and Company fits the bill. With its cable detail at front, shawl collar and tie belt at waist, and flattering cut at the low hip, this sweater vest meets ever requirement for fit and style. And with its Cotton/acrylic blend, it is easily hand washed and worn again and again.

The look for the season is legs are showing. Skirts are shorter and heels are higher. So how do those of us with real lives and real bodies fit into the trend? Because there are some great slimming effects to showing a little more skin. Here are a few ideas.
If thigh high boots are not your thing, consider wearing boots with matching tights or leggings of the same color to create a “Column of color” which draws the eye up and down and elongates the body.
Consider tucking in black leggings or tights into boots under a skirt or dress that falls at midthigh. If appropriate, tights may also be worn. Unless you are very tall, avoid flat boots in favor of ones with a heel. Of course 4 inches would be great but 2-3” will do nicely.
Unless it is a romantic and billowy skirt, avoid hemlines below the knee. Right at or just above the knee is the optimum length. If you are wearing short or mid thigh boots, look to wear matching tights or leggings to complete the look.
The idea of this look is to elongate the legs, not to look trashy. Take a quick look in the mirror as you pass by to be sure you have gained the desired effect!
Here is a great trendy boot. And when I say trendy, this little number does it all. It is western. It is urban. It is slouchy. It is tough luxe with its embellished buckles. And with a low heel and moderate arch support, this is a great boot to wear all day with jeans and look uber cute.
The best way to wear this boot is with skinny jeans and an oversized tunic. This is definitely what I would classify as a weekend boot because you would not want to wear it with anything tailored or dressy unless you are Stevie Nicks. Then you can wear them with a long lace dress. But for the rest of us, here is a great weekend boot for an active day!
