Sydney Jacket at Doncaster.comThe last time that the oversized boxy jacket with the oversized shoulder pads aka the “Boyfriend Jacket” was around, I was in college.  At the time, I wore this trend to the extreme.  My favorite was a real tuxedo jacket that my dad had tossed to the side when it no longer fit with the sleeves pushed up, crisp white shirt, jeans and flat shoes.  Its no secret that I am not in college anymore and I would feel very silly trying to go back to that.  Actually, it would break one of my hard and fast rules for style…never wear a trend twice!  But the boyfriend jacket is everywhere and I still LOVE them….so the age old question is how to wear the trend in a way that is relevant while being age appropriate?

Two of my favorite words…princess seams.  This jacket has them along with shoulder and waist darts and a slightly rounded hemline.  I CAN wear the look that is tailored to my body type thanks to this ingenious construction detail that takes down the “boxiness” just a notch.  It takes into consideration the silhouette of my body and allows me to follow the idea of the trend without looking like I raided the attic at my parents house!  This white boyfriend jacket from Doncaster will be in my closet and the closet of many of my clients this season.  It fits my life and my body now and every girl needs at least one great white go to jacket in her spring/summer closet!

Berlin Jacket in Patent Leather and Tulle at doncaster.com All of the jackets this season have a universal chicness to them.  The leather jackets notch it up just a bit and fall into the category of tough luxe.  The leather jackets this season are very fitted and have embellishments such as zippers, buckles and grommets.  The seasonal trend is to balance this tough look with a glammed up piece such as metallic, sequins, or chunky jewelry.

I just love The Berlin Jacket In Patent Leather And Tulle for several reasons.  First of all its style is trendy meets classic.  The patent leather strips with tulle trim is very unexpected and glamourous.  The jacket has a shape that is as elegant as it is flattering.  And the cut of the jacket, with full length sleeves, a zipper closure at the front and bust darts is very flattering to women with curves.   The jacket is fully lined, which will allow it to hold its shape for many seasons to come.

Linen Belted Jacket from Doncaster Back of Linen Jacket from Doncaster.com

With all the super short skirts and skyscraper high heels for Spring, I am finding it increasingly difficult to find fashion that is appropriate for career women.  I do love the belted look of this season but with my very short waist, I find it challenging to wear.

This jacket from Doncaster is a beautiful and fashionable alternative.  The belt is threaded through tabs at the waist so that it is only visible at the front.  The back has a stiched down diamond pleat detail with all over topstiching.  Other notable features are a slit cuff detail so that the sleeve can be worn either full length or bracelet length with a single cuff; a covered snap hidden at the placket so that the jacket looks very neat at the front; a back shoulder yoke and princess seams and waist darts for easy alteration to the perfect fit.  The jacket is made of linen for that comfortable summer look but fully lined with a stretch lining to maintain a neat look.

Shrunken Seamed Jacket from MaxStudioIn honor of our Armed Forces, it seemed only fitting to feature a military inspired piece.  It is such an important trend this season and flattering too.

This little jacket from MaxStudio with its front detail and interesting collar that moves the eye toward the neckline is very flattering for the rectangle and triangle body type.  And with huge markdowns, its is priced to sell.  These sleeves are meant to be worn pulled up above the elbow.  Wearing them all the way down puts the sleeve in the same line with the bottom of the jacket, which looks boxy.  Wear it with jeans or to the office with dark pants or a skirt.  Or as a jacket over your favorite tailored LBD.

Here is what MaxStudio has to say about this piece:

This sleek and seamed stretch faille jacket has lots of fun design touches to lend a chic military vibe: the shrunken shape, the epaulets at the shoulders that create an angular shaped neckline, chain stitching and seaming throughout, along with big utilitarian buttons. Pockets that are cleverly designed into the seams are just another reason to put this on your must-own list. This glam jacket fits true to size and is fully lined. 59% RAYON, 22% NYLON, 15% SPANDEX, 4% POLYESTER

I just love the fact that it is perfectly acceptable to wear white after Labor Day.  According to tradition, you would create a fashion emergency if you dared wear white in the Fall or Winter unless it was your wedding day!  I also love the fact that this Nappa Leather jacket is double breasted and has a notched collar.  And the buttons are a beautiful faux horn.  There is much being said this season about replacing boring buttons with interesting ones as a way to update a look.  These are just a few clever ways to modernize the otherwise very classic look of this beautiful leather jacket.

The difference between a truly amazing leather jacket and something that looks run of the mill are details.  But be careful where the details are placed.  If you do not want to call attention to your chest or midline, avoid details that pull the eye to that area.  On this leather jacket, the full length sleeves have a sleeve tab and silver buckle detail.  Notice the shoulders with the button down shoulder flap, which gives an appearance of strong shoulders.

Something to be careful of with a double breasted jacket, especially a leather jacket, is that it does not look too boxy.  To avoid this and make this leather jacket more fitted, Doncaster has designed in a back shoulder yoke to balance the double breasted front, and added front and back princess seams so that the jacket does not hang loosely at the bottom.  To keep the leather jacket neat and fitted, there are vertical besom pockets with a zipper closure. Patch pockets on a  leather jacket like this would look very boxy.
